Re-Occupying City Hall Park (For an Hour Anyway…)

I was asked to shoot the command staff of the team that handled the Occupy LA eviction last November. Considering all the things that went wrong in the other evictions around the country (UC Davis, Boston, Oakland), I have to give the department props for handling it as thoughtfully as they did.

Credit goes mainly to Deputy Chief Jose Perez, who ran the show from police headquarters across the street. He told me this photo was take only a few feet from where he was standing the night of the eviction.

This is Why I Love What I Do

Last Thursday I shot the basketball game between San Clemente High and Dana Hills High for the OC Register. It was the final home game for San Clemente and it was Senior Night with one unique recognition. Alex Neidl, who has cerebral palsy has been the team manager for San Clemente all four years of high school, and he was going to be able to finally play and score a basket.

Granted, the coaches from the two schools talked about it before the game, they were going to let Alex score the first basket, then have Dana Hills even it up, call a timeout and sub Alex out of the game.

You could tell Alex was pretty stoked about playing, I thought it was pretty awesome to watch and shoot.

Long Beach goes to Pot in OC Weekly Story

I shot the portraits running in this weeks OC Weekly cover story on Long Beach’s apparently failed marijuana dispensary policy.

Pot Clubs – Images by Miguel Vasconcellos

I met some really interesting people like Kat Aldrich, who says her collective was raided illegally by LBCPD. Josh Howard used to own a collective, but says he got screwed out of it.

It’s one of the thing I really love about photography, being able to meet people I otherwise would likely never cross paths with who end up having some of the most interesting personalities or stories I could hope to encounter.

PBR Comes to Anaheim (Well, Pabst Was There, but Not What I Meant, Hipsters!)

The Professional Bull Riders made a stop at the Honda Center in Anaheim this weekend and I was Lucky enough to cover the event for the OC Register. I had a blast, and I hope the photos convey that.

A huge thanks to Merit Tully of the Honda Center, who walked me and fellow photographer Drew Kelly to the catwalks above the action. The first and third shots were some of the results.

Woodbridge Wins the Game, but Loses the More Important Battle vs. Northwood

I shot the Northwood vs. Woodbridge basketball game Friday night, and this particular matchup has always been fierce. Historically, Woodbridge has dominated Northwood, which has led (so I hear) to big fights afterwards in nearby parks between the fans, which is hysterical to me since I picture the parents rumbling like the Sharks and Jets when I hear about the brawls.

This night was like any other, the game was close until the last quarter, with fans from both sides chanting back and forth–Woodbridge–”Scoreboooard, scooreboooard!” Woodbridge–”Just like football!” (clap, clap, clapclapclap!) Northwood–”This is our house.” (clap, clap, clapclapclap!)
When Woodbridge began to lead by more points, their fans really threw it in Northwood’s face. “This is our house!” (clap, clap, clapclapclap!) “Why so quiet?” (clap, clap, clapclapclap!)
In the final seconds of the game Northwood came back with “S-A-T score!” (clap, clap, clapclapclap!”). They shut down the fans hard. And I had to laugh out loud, it was beautiful, especially the silence from Woodbridge fans.

I like everyone I deal with at both schools, and I try not to take sides, but in this particular game of chants, how can you not?

Basketball fans crack me up.

Warriorman, the relatively new Woodbridge High School mascot

I shot one of the cross-town rivalry basketball games in Irvine Friday night, Woodbridge vs University. Over the last few years high school basketball has become almost as crazy as football. The crowds really come out on a Friday night and both Woodbridge and University have pretty hilarious fans.

Above is Warriorman, the Woodbridge High mascot, who’s been making appearances for the last couple years.

I love University fans best though, when they’re at home they have some of the best distractions for free-throwers from the opposition. Below is what they had Friday, in the past I’ve seen Michael Jackson’s booking photo, OJ Simpson’s booking photo, Jonas Brothers glamour shots, it’s pretty ridiculous…And I love it all.

Not What You’d Think

Shooting boxing Saturday, I really had to jam on editing, chimping my shots in between rounds, and not really able to look too closely at images beyond the obvious.

Abner Mares celebrates his win over Joseph Agbeko during Saturday's rematch.

OK, so one of my two favorite shots of the night is kind of obvious, it’s Abner Mares reacting to hearing he won his rematch against Joseph Agbeko after winning the first under what was termed “poor officiating.” It’s not a perfect shot, but it tells a story.

But when I saw this shot of Jose Silveira in his corner across from me at the start of his fight, for some reason he made me think of Charlie Chaplin in “City Lights.” When he was standing there in his corner, you couldn’t see his team and he looked like he was there to fight alone, he had some secret, noble reason to be there in the ring. I have no idea whether that may be the case, the fight was actually pretty lame, but when I was going through my take from the night (which was more than 3,000 photos), it was this image and only one other that stopped me long enough to take a closer look.

Victoria’s Secret Viewing Party-With Angels!

I was asked by South Coast Plaza to cover the Pink Carpet event for the Victoria’s Secret 2011 Fashion Show viewing party at the Samueli Theater in Costa Mesa Tuesday night. The photos pretty much speak for themselves.

It was a pretty crazy scene with all the wire services there to get shots of the models. One thing they didn’t have: access to the party inside, so I was able to make a few shots they weren’t able to get, which is kind of cool to me.

The Agony and the Ecstasy

With high school football coming to a close, I shot the El Toro vs. Yorba Linda quarterfinal game at Trabuco Hills High.

One team will be filled with seniors playing their last game. I’ve never seen a playoff game that wasn’t emotional, this wasn’t any different. You can see how they react, and I have to admit, it’s kind of tough shooting the losing team. You want to give them their space, but you also want to show what was happening on the field. I’ve never had a player tell me anything when I shoot them in such an emotional state, but I never want to push it.

OC Weekly’s Story About the Fullerton PD

Fullerton PD Story for the OC Weekly – Images by Miguel Vasconcellos

A few weeks ago, I was asked by the OC Weekly to shoot three people affected in one way or another by the Fullerton PD. Following the beating death of Kelly Thomas, the department has been facing intense scrutiny. The story ran Thanksgiving day and my shots ran in there of Robyn Nordell, whose home was mistakenly raided by narcotics officers; City Councilman Bruce Whitaker, who believes there was some sort of the Kelly Thomas beating; and Ron Thomas, father of Kelly, who has made it his mission to get justice from his son from the police who killed him.

I really hope Ron gets what he wants. Based on what little I know about his case, it’s hard not to see things his way. It breaks my heart that the last time he saw his son, it was in a hospital and knowing that while he was being beaten, he was calling for him.

I don’t know what I would do in his situation.
